Have you been following the Kyte Baby controversy? A company that makes baby clothing denied an employee the ability to work remotely while a baby she was adopting was in the NICU.This obviously raises the broad issue of the utter lack of parental leave/accommodation rights in this country. Full stop, that is awful and unfair and actually shouldn’t be left up to individual employers to decide because we should have national policy. At the same time, a slightly more subtle aspect of this is the fact that employees - and the public - are going to expect that your company culture and values are congruent with the work you do in the world. A healthcare company is going to be expected to have good health insurance and generous sick leave, for instance. My parent’s home building company, Bensonwood, is known for helping to host “work parties” where employees help each other with home renovation needs.A company that makes baby clothes - at bare minimum - should recognize the precious time parents need to care for an infant in the NICU. I don’t believe that employers can be everything to everyone, but what they focus on in how they care for employees needs to make real sense in the context of what the company exists to do.

Parental Leave Consulting can feel a lot like David and Goliath. What do I mean by that? It's a heavy subject when you're working with expecting parents, especially in a country with no federal paid leave. Employers often resist employees taking extra time off, leading to widespread misinformation and gatekeeping. As one person striving to combat this "system," it feels like a daily battle to help individuals fight for their rightful time and pay. I constantly hear stories of difficult work environments—often physically challenging—retaliation, and overall mistreatment. These situations, while tough to hear about, fuel my determination to provide resources and support to help people advocate for themselves. These are people's lives, families, and real situations. While some companies genuinely care about their employees, many don't, and that's why I do what I do!#ParentalLeave #Advocacy #FamilyFirst #WorkplaceEquity #FightForYourRights
